The Virgin Mother: Mariam, the Best of All Women

Mariam, the virgin mother was a role model who taught us patience, persistence, asceticism, awareness, and piety in practice, for which she was bestowed the highest of ranks among all women as stated in the Qur’an. But in our current times, many people have drifted either to the side of exaggeration- claiming she is the mother of God- or vituperation- accusing her of adultery. The Qur’an, however, denies both claims. Therefore, the goal of this article is to better know her through a methodology that is retrospective and deductive, as well as explanatory of some verses from the Qur’an, shedding the light on its moderate view, away from exaggeration or negligence. I also adopted an analytical methodology to address the morals one could derive from her biography. This culminated in highlighting the distinction and dignity of her character, and signifying the double standards employed in the society today, as well as the society’s need to follow her example in virtue and awareness in order for it to resolve its contemporary issues. And finally, there is the recommendation to look back at the past and learn from such role models to deal with emerging provisions objectively.
