Abstract (English)
Freedom in Islam is a right that is bound by adherence to Sharia. Following whims that contradict religion falls outside these boundaries and leads its adherent to destruction. The distinction between the two can often be a fine line that confuses many. Through knowledge, clarity is achieved, and with the scale of Sharia, concepts are measured, values are elevated, and the discerning individual distinguishes between right and wrong. People have delved into these discussions in an alarming manner, ranging from those who follow their whims and spread them in society, to those who blindly offer unweighted opinions that disregard the wise balance of Sharia. Thus, the core issues of this research focus on answering the following questions: What is the correct scale for distinguishing between freedom and self-driven whims? What are the dangers of conflating whims with freedom? What are the religious solutions supported by evidence? How can one distinguish between praiseworthy or permissible desires and blameworthy ones? This study utilizes the demonstrative, historical-analytical, inductive, and interpretiveanalytical methodologies. Ultimately, if we are to discuss individual freedom fairly and moderately, we must not forget that it is bound by divine commands, as well as by the limits of causing harm to oneself or others. A wise person must learn to discern the boundaries of personal freedom to ensure well-being in this life and the Hereafter.
